I Hoya 58mm Pro-1 Super HMC Multi-Coated UV Filter?
The filter is still in its original packaging. I was told that these filters are applied to cameras using film, not digital cameras, which has built in material to block UV radiation? Now, I am considering selling it if it's something I do not need and I can buy something else. I have a canon 50mm 1.4 prime lens.
This is a good quality filter, the whole issue of "protection" filters is controversial. I have never used more than 50 years as a professional, my cameras have been subjected to coal mines in the steelworks and other hazardous environments without problems, the only time I would consider using them is to wind blown sand. The idea that a thin piece of glass provides mechanical protection, for me, absurd, get better protection against a decent hood in particular rubber. I have seen problems with the front / rear focus, flash, although this helps the coating, glass adding to the front of a lens no matter how good the optics can only do worse and can never improve. The original idea with filters UV to the misting can be obtained with the film in high UV radiation, such as mountaintops or on a beach on a bright day summers in the Arctic / Antarctica. digital sensors are not very sensitive to UV rays, so do not need them for this reason. My advice is to sell and get something more useful. Chris
