What is the 12x optical zoom on my point and shoot equivalent DSLR lens focal length in mm?
I now have a camera 12x optical zoom. I want to buy DSLR and some all around the lens. Like the Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3. Is 300mm zoom equivalent to 12x or so x?
Just so you know, the 12x has NOTHING to do with an actual reading mm. 12x simply tells how * zoom your camera has the widest setting to the configuration telephoto. To determine the number of x, simply divide the larger number by the smaller number. Meaning, in order that you refer (Tamron 28-300), simply divide 300 by 28 to determine the value of x, in this case is 10.7x (basically 11x). But this is misleading. Because a 100-400mm lens is considered only a 4x zoom (400/100 = 4) and so if you were to look at the first lens and see that it is a 11x zoom and this is only a 4x zoom, you "d want to think that the 11x is almost 3 times better when I could not be further from the truth. So the point is, your question really makes no sense because we have no idea what the equivalent 35 mm is in your camera. Could be 20-240mm or 35-420mm. Both examples are considered 12x optical zoom, but vary greatly on the amount of "zoom" they have in the telephoto end. Go to dpreview.com and search your camera. On the specifications, you'll see a number listed for the equivalent of 35 mm from its zoom range. That number, at least give a good starting point. Also, remember that some have a DSLR crop factor 1.5 (Nikon), some have a factor of 1.6 of the crop (in Canon), which will have a crop factor 1.3 (Canon 1D Mark III), and some who have no crop factor at all (Canon 1D, 1D Mark II).
